Hand Stand

Hand Stand is a painted resin cast of a hand by Gawie Joubert a freestanding sculpture that treats a familiar piece of anatomy as an object to be examined in isolation.

Severed from arm, gesture, and context, the hand stops reading as expression and starts reading as architecture: a structure of joints, planes, and tendons whose specificity is usually overlooked because it is always in motion. The cast holds it still long enough to be seen.

Built in clay, transferred to a mould, cast in resin, and finished by hand, the painted surface is what individuates the object moving it from anatomical reference toward a particular hand with its own colour, light, and skin.
